Door-to-Door Time: Train Wins
The flight itself takes about 1h 15m. But that's not the full picture.
For Eurostar, you need to be at St Pancras 90 minutes before departure for security and French border control -- and you exit the train in central Paris with no further checks. For a flight from central London, travel to Heathrow or Gatwick takes around an hour, then factor in two hours for check-in, security, waiting and boarding, plus the flight itself, then taxi time, French border control, and travel from CDG to central Paris -- another 1.5 to 2 hours.
The Eurostar service runs at minimum hourly frequencies between London and Paris, with the fastest journey time at 2 hours 16 minutes and an average of 2 hours 28 minutes.
The verdict: city centre to city centre, the train is consistently faster.
Price: Closer Than You Think
Budget airlines can offer flights from around EUR 25 -- but that's rarely the whole story. Add airport transfers (EUR 15-30 each way), checked baggage fees, and seat selection, and the real cost climbs quickly.
Eurostar Standard tickets start from around EUR 29 one way when booked well in advance. Prices fluctuate significantly -- book at least 6-8 weeks in advance for the best fares.
When flights are cheaper: Last-minute budget fares with hand luggage only, travelling between outer airports. When the train wins on price: When you factor in all airport costs and book ahead.
Comfort: Train Offers a Different Experience
On the Eurostar, you board in central London or central Paris, sit in a spacious seat with a table, free Wi-Fi and power outlets, and arrive at the other city's main station ready to go.
The Eurostar offers a more relaxed atmosphere than airports, with quicker checks, spacious seats, free Wi-Fi and power outlets, and a generous luggage allowance of two large bags plus a carry-on.
One consideration: heavy luggage. Unlike flying where you can drop bags at check-in, on Eurostar your bags travel with you -- which can be less convenient if you're carrying multiple large cases. Check current luggage policies on the carrier's website before booking.
Environment: Train Emits Far Less CO2
Independent research commissioned by Eurostar estimates that a train from London to Paris emits approximately 11kg of CO2 per passenger -- over 90% less than the approximately 122kg per passenger emitted by the equivalent flight.
Research published by Our World in Data shows the Eurostar emits around 4 grams of CO2 per passenger kilometre, compared to 154 grams from a short-haul flight.
Planes also emit at high altitude, where warming effects are estimated to be 2-3 times greater than ground-level emissions.
When Should You Fly?
Flying makes more sense if you are already at an airport connecting from a long-haul flight, if you need a specific departure time not served by the train, or if you find an exceptional budget fare with no additional costs. For city centre to city centre travel, the train is competitive on price when booked in advance, and typically faster door-to-door.
