Italy's First High-Speed Line

The Rome-Florence route uses the Direttissima, Italy's first dedicated high-speed railway line. Opened in stages between 1977 and 1992, it was one of the earliest purpose-built high-speed lines in the world, predating France's TGV Sud-Est (1981) in initial concept. The line allows trains to reach 250 km/h on the dedicated sections.

Frecciargento -- The Tilting Alternative

In addition to Frecciarossa, Trenitalia also operates Frecciargento (Silver Arrow) tilting trains on the Rome-Florence corridor. These trains use active tilting technology to maintain high speeds through curves. Journey times are comparable to Frecciarossa services.
