About NS

NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) is the principal railway operator of the Netherlands, running roughly 4,800 train services daily across one of Europe's most intensively used rail networks. Founded in 1938 and headquartered in Utrecht, NS connects every major Dutch city with clock-face timetables -- trains typically depart every 10, 15, or 30 minutes on each route.

The domestic fleet includes the iconic yellow VIRM double-decker Intercity trains, the new high-speed ICNG (Intercity Nieuwe Generatie) running at 200 km/h on the HSL-Zuid line, and blue-white Sprinter stopping services. Since December 2024, NS also operates the EuroCity Direct service to Brussels jointly with SNCB.

Travelling in the Netherlands is uniquely simple: tap your contactless bank card or phone (Apple Pay, Google Pay) at the yellow card readers when entering and leaving any station. This OVpay system works on every train, tram, metro, and bus in the country -- no special ticket needed. For international journeys, NS International (nsinternational.com) offers Eurostar to London/Paris, ICE to Germany, and Nightjet sleeper services to Austria and Switzerland.
