About SJ
SJ AB (formerly Statens Järnvägar) is Sweden's state-owned passenger train operator, running over 1,200 departures daily and serving more than 275 stations across Sweden. With over 130,000 passengers carried each day, SJ is the backbone of Swedish rail travel, connecting major cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö with high-speed services, and reaching the Arctic north with overnight sleeper trains.
SJ's flagship service is the X2000, a tilting high-speed train that reaches 200 km/h on conventional tracks — a technology that allows fast journey times through Sweden's curving rail network without dedicated high-speed lines. The newer SJ 3000 (Bombardier Regina) fleet complements the X2000 on routes to northern Sweden and Oslo, offering wider carriages and modern amenities. Both services feature free WiFi, power sockets at every seat, and an on-board bistro car.
Beyond high-speed trains, SJ operates InterCity services and an extensive night train network. The SJ Nattåg sleeper trains connect Stockholm with Luleå, Kiruna, and Narvik above the Arctic Circle — one of Europe's most scenic overnight journeys. SJ also co-operates the EuroNight sleeper service from Stockholm to Hamburg and Berlin, offering a direct overnight rail link between Scandinavia and continental Europe.

Booking Tips

Choose 2nd Class Calm for Quiet Travel
SJ's unique 2nd Class Calm (Lugn) carriage offers a quiet environment with no phone calls. On some routes it includes complimentary catering similar to 1st Class — excellent value.
1st Class Breakfast Before 09:00
If departing before 09:00, 1st Class passengers receive a complimentary breakfast. Consider early morning departures on the X2000 for the best 1st Class value.
Night Train to the Arctic
SJ's Nattåg sleeper trains to Luleå, Kiruna, and Narvik are among Europe's most scenic overnight journeys. Book a 1st Class sleeper for a private compartment with shower, toilet, and breakfast.
Change at Malmö for Copenhagen
In 2026, direct Stockholm–Copenhagen X2000 services are temporarily suspended due to rolling stock shortages. Book a connection via Malmö — the change is quick and easy at Malmö Central.
